This is a privacy decision dressed up as a storage decision. A local NVR keeps the only copy of your footage on a drive inside your own house. What actually happens to footage on a local NVR?

The recorder writes continuously from every camera to a hard drive sitting in the box, using the bitrate convention of roughly 2 Mbps for a 2MP stream up to 8 Mbps for a 12MP stream in H.265. At 1 Mbps working out to about 450 MB of footage per hour, an eight camera system running 4K cameras at 6 Mbps each writes close to 390 GB a day, and a 2TB drive at the usual 93 percent usable fraction holds that for roughly four and a half days of pure continuous recording, or weeks if the recorder only writes on motion.

What does cloud recording actually buy you?

Convenience, mostly. No drive to size, no NVR to mount, and footage that is reachable from anywhere without opening a port on your router. For a single camera or two, that convenience is real and the monthly fee is small enough not to matter much.

Where does the cloud subscription cost actually land?

Per camera, and it compounds. A plan priced for one camera does not cover six, so a whole house system on a cloud plan is usually paying a multi camera tier, and that tier renews every single month regardless of whether anything happened on camera that month. Five years of a modest monthly plan on a multi camera home system frequently exceeds what the cameras themselves cost to buy outright.

Does a local NVR really have no ongoing cost?

That is a reasonable hybrid: the drive in the house is the record of what happened, and the cloud copy is insurance in case a thief takes the whole recorder along with the television.

Some cameras and NVRs support pushing motion clips to a cloud account or an FTP server as a secondary copy while keeping full, continuous recording on the local drive as the primary record.

Most vendors drop your stored recording history down to whatever the free tier allows, which is often nothing beyond a live view, and some stop storing anything at all. Before you point a camera at anything. Aim cameras at your own property and your own boundary, never into a neighbour's windows or across their garden. Cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms, or anywhere else a person reasonably expects privacy are a serious legal problem, and that includes guests, lodgers and anyone who works in your home.
