Complete Home Security Camera Systems by Budget
Most houses land on a six to eight camera PoE system with a local recorder, which records continuously, needs no subscription, and keeps every frame inside the building. Wireless cameras are the right answer only where a cable genuinely cannot be run.
Every build below lists everything needed to finish the job, with nothing assumed and nothing missing. If you buy the list, you can install a working system. Each one also says what you can skip and what to upgrade first, because telling you not to buy something is what makes the rest of the list worth reading.

Work out your own numbers first
Before you install any of this. Aim cameras at your own property, never into a neighbour's windows. Cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms or anywhere with a reasonable expectation of privacy are a serious legal problem, including for guests and anyone who works in your home. Audio is legally different from video, many US states require the consent of every party to a recorded conversation, and several recorders capture audio by default. Some places require visible notice, and landlords and homeowner associations often add their own rules. This is researched general information and not legal advice.
