Intermediate Wired PoE ladder

Long Driveway and Gate Coverage

Quick answer

A long approach defeats ordinary cameras because pixel density falls off with distance: a 4K camera on a 2.8 mm lens stops identifying anyone past about 28 feet. Optical zoom is the only fix, and a run longer than 328 feet needs an extender to stay within the Ethernet limit.

This is the problem a wide lens cannot solve. A camera at the house looking down a two hundred foot drive records that a vehicle arrived and tells you nothing about who was in it.

The build combines three things: optical zoom to put pixels on a distant subject, a cable strategy that survives the distance, and a sensor at the far end so you get warning before anyone reaches the house.

Optimised for: Identification at range on a single long approach, rather than coverage everywhere.

Item Why this one Price Buy
The camera that reaches
REOLINK RLC-823S1 4K PoE PTZ Camera, 5X Optical Zoom
REOLINK
Five times optical zoom multiplies pixels per metre at the far end of the drive by five, which no amount of sensor resolution on a fixed wide lens will do. $246.49 Check price
REOLINK TrackMix PoE Dual-Lens PTZ Security Camera, 6X Hybrid Zoom
REOLINK
Two lenses at once, one wide for context and one telephoto for detail, which resolves the argument between covering the whole drive and identifying anyone on it. $199.99 Check price
Recording
REOLINK RLN8-410 8CH NVR Network Video Recorder PoE
REOLINK
Eight PoE ports built into the recorder, so the cameras get power and data from one box with no separate switch to budget. $349.99 Check price
Seagate Skyhawk 4TB Video Internal Hard Drive
Seagate
Rated for continuous multi-stream writing, which is the whole difference between a surveillance drive and the cheaper desktop drive beside it. $159.99 Check price
Getting down the drive
TRUE CABLE Cat6 Direct Burial Bulk Ethernet Cable, Unshielded, 1000ft, 23AWG Solid Bare Copper
TRUE CABLE
Direct burial rated with a solid bare copper conductor at 23AWG, the thickest common gauge and therefore the least voltage drop over a long PoE run. $277.99 Check price
Revotech 2 Port PoE Extender, PoE+ Repeater, 100 Meters
Revotech
The standards compliant answer to a run past the 100 metre limit, adding another full segment of power and data. $16.79 Check price
Hrensaw Large Outdoor Electrical Box, Weatherproof, IP54
Hrensaw
A dry, rated enclosure for the extender partway along the run, with room for the service loops. $24.99 Check price
Warning before arrival
HTZSAFE Driveway Alarm, Long Range Motion Sensor, 1 Receiver and 2 Sensors
HTZSAFE
Covers a long approach where running Ethernet for another camera is the expensive answer to a question a sensor answers for far less. $43.99 Check price
Tools and termination
Klein Tools VDV526-200 LAN Scout Jr Cable Tester Kit
Klein Tools
Reports cable length, which on a run near the limit is the measurement that matters most. $59.97 Check price
ZoeRax Ethernet Crimping Tool Kit with RJ45 Pass Through Connectors
ZOERAX
Termination, with pass through connectors so the wire order can be verified before crimping. $29.99 Check price
VCE UL Listed Cat6 Keystone Jacks 10Gbps, 25 Pack
VCE
Punch down jacks at both ends of the long run. $25.99 Check price
Mounting and notice
WiTi Universal Vertical Pole Mount for Security Camera, Stainless Steel
WiTi
A pole mount at the gate end, in stainless for a position nobody will be revisiting often. $12.99 Check price
Faittoo Video Surveillance Sign with 36 inch Stake, 12x12 inch
Faittoo
Notice at the entrance, which is where it does the most deterrent work. $22.99 Check price

What you can skip

Telling you not to buy something is what makes the rest of this list credible. None of the following is required for a working system.

  • The extender, if the run measures under about 295 feet of cable in the ground. Measure the actual route rather than the straight line distance.
  • The second camera. One optical zoom camera on the approach is a complete answer if you do not also need wide context.

What to upgrade first

Fibre with media converters if the gate is on a separate building or the run crosses open ground. It removes the distance limit entirely and takes the copper lightning path out of the equation.

Where this build runs out

Optical zoom narrows the field of view as it reaches, so a zoomed camera covers a strip rather than an area. If you need both the whole drive and a readable face, that is two cameras or a dual lens unit, not one zoomed camera.

Compare the other builds

Before you install any of this. Aim cameras at your own property and your own boundary, never into a neighbour's windows. Cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms or anywhere with a reasonable expectation of privacy are a serious legal problem, including for guests, lodgers and anyone who works in your home. Audio is legally different from video, many US states require the consent of every party to a recorded conversation, and several recorders capture audio by default, so check your own state before enabling it. Some places require visible notice that recording is taking place, and landlords and homeowner associations often add their own rules. This is researched general information and not legal advice.

Once it is running. Change every default password, keep the firmware updated, and be clear where the footage goes. Mains wiring for a floodlight is licensed electrician work in many places, and running cable in a wall cavity has its own rules. Prices change often, so treat the running total as a guide rather than a quote.
